At International School Suva (ISS), the safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. We are dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment where every child can learn, grow, and thrive. We have three layers of support focusing on the students, staff, and on the wider community.
Ensuring Children’s Safety
Our comprehensive safeguarding policies ensure students feel heard, valued, respected, and protected. Dedicated safeguarding officers are always available to address concerns and ensure well-being. We believe every child has the right to an education free from harm and take proactive measures to guarantee their safety. To that end, we provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum which supports children in their learning of their needs, rights, and responsibilities. Bespoke support sessions are available for students and parents in order to help them navigate challenging situations.
Providing Ongoing Professional Development
We provide regular, in-depth training for all staff and volunteers, covering best practices in child protection. This continuous learning ensures everyone who interacts with our students is equipped to identify and respond to any concerns, fostering a vigilant and responsive community. We hold annual training for all our staff, external activity providers, and volunteers. We also liaise with external agencies, when relevant, to ensure that their staff are up to date with best practices in safeguarding.
Adhering to a Collaborative and Inclusive Approach
Reflecting the communal values of Fijian society, safeguarding at ISS is a collective responsibility. We encourage open communication and collaboration among students, parents, staff, and the wider community. If and when necessary, we comply with the state mandatory reporting laws and liaise with the relevant agencies. By means of ‘duavata’ or working together, we create a strong support network prioritising our students’ safety and well-being.
