[vc_row gap=”35″ content_placement=”middle”][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text css=””]With the absence of a national legislation that specifically caters to labour standards on board fishing vessels, the FFIA had reached out to the Ministry of Labour in 2019 for assistance, suggesting discussion on the Work in Fishing Convention or ILO C188.<\/p>\n

At the same time, we had also reached out to the Ministry of Fisheries in the same year, for the development of a policy, whilst the work on the legislation is pursued. The Fiji National Crewing Policy was launched in April 2025, and we thank FFA for its assistance.<\/p>\n

Commitment to International Labour Standards<\/span><\/h4>\n

FFIA has been at the forefront of advocating for the implementation of the ILO Work in Fishing Convention (C188), which provides a dedicated framework for protecting the rights, health, and safety of fishing crews. In 2019, FFIA formally requested the Fijian Government to ratify C188 and collaborated with the Ministry of Fisheries to develop a National Crewing Policy, adopted by Cabinet in 2023. FFIA continues to engage in an inter-agency working group involving government, NGOs, unions, and the ILO Pacific Office to guide national readiness for ratification and practical compliance.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css_animation=”slideInLeft” css=”.vc_custom_1753325819052{background-color: #1E73BE !important;}” el_class=”.style”]<\/p>\n

Labour Inspection and Working Conditions<\/span><\/h4>\n

Our members adhere to high standards of working conditions, supporting efforts to improve labour inspection protocols, uphold decent accommodation and crew facilities, and ensure that vessels meet national and international expectations for crew treatment. We operate in line with all relevant national laws, licensing regimes, and monitoring frameworks, including mandatory onboard observers, Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS), and Electronic Monitoring Systems (EMS). Our products are supported by robust catch documentation, traceability systems, and health certifications that comply with global import standards.
