With the absence of a national legislation that specifically caters to labour standards on board fishing vessels, the FFIA had reached out to the Ministry of Labour in 2019 for assistance, suggesting discussion on the Work in Fishing Convention or ILO C188.
At the same time, we had also reached out to the Ministry of Fisheries in the same year, for the development of a policy, whilst the work on the legislation is pursued. The Fiji National Crewing Policy was launched in April 2025, and we thank FFA for its assistance.
