August 12, 2025Conservation International Unveils Value Proposition and Business Model to Transform Fiji’s Tuna Industry
Conservation International (CI), in partnership with the Fiji Government, the Fiji Fishing Industry Association (FFIA), and the Pacific Fishing Company Pte Limited (PAFCO), has launched a landmark Value Proposition and Business Model designed to position Fiji’s tuna industry as a regional leader in sustainable, high-value seafood production.
Developed by independent consultant Dr. Glenn Finau and supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Common Oceans ABNJ Program, the initiative provides the first integrated roadmap for the sector—combining sustainability, competitiveness, and profitability.
Key Initiatives Include:
- Fleet Modernization Finance Facility – Government-backed, development partner-supported funding for modern, fuel-efficient vessels with premium handling capabilities.
- Cold-Chain and Infrastructure Upgrades – Ultra-low temperature storage, improved port facilities, and efficient logistics to meet global quality standards.
- Fiji Fisheries Research and Coordination Hub (FFRCH) – A central platform to drive research, policy advocacy, market expansion, and training.
- Eco-Gourmet Initiative – Linking “storied fish” to high-end domestic and international markets with blockchain-based traceability.
- Byproduct Utilization – Converting fish waste into high-value products like fish oil, fishmeal, and nutraceuticals.
Positive Outcomes Anticipated:
- Boost access to premium export markets such as Japan, the EU, and North America.
- Strengthen Fiji’s reputation for MSC-certified, sustainably caught tuna.
- Create quality jobs and improve fisher livelihoods.
- Increase industry resilience through innovation and market diversification.
“This report provides a clear, actionable path to a stronger, more sustainable tuna industry that benefits both the economy and the environment,” said a CI Fiji spokesperson. “By aligning investment, innovation, and international market strategies, Fiji can secure its place as a leader in premium, sustainable seafood.”
